Home finale ends in winning fashion for Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Augustana) – No. 12 Augustana softball capped its regular season home slate with yet another conference sweep by taking down Winona State 2-1 and 2-0 in back-to-back games on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings improve to 41-9 and 23-3 with a 16-game win streak while the Warriors move to 36-13 and 17-7. GAME ONE: No. 12 Augustana 2, Winona State 1An early showing at the plate was enough to push the Vikings ahead while their strong defense held the Warriors from climbing back to take the 2-1 victory. Grace Glanzer collected four strikeouts against six batters faced in the first two innings of action, helping down the Warriors in order both times. Augustana logged a hit in the bottom of the first, but got no further until the bottom of the second. A costly fielding error by WSU put Stella Harber on first base before the Vikings were boxed into a two-out situation. With that one runner on, Sidney Smart rocketed an RBI double out to the left center wall to score the first run of the day. She soon made it home herself following a blitzing base hit from Liz Dierks through the left side, pushing the home team ahead 2-0. The runs brought home in the second inning was the only bout of scoring for AU, who would tally three more hits throughout the game but get no further than second base. Winona State inched closer in the top of the sixth inning after plating one run and was soon attempting a rally in the top of the seventh to extend the game. But Augustana fought off the momentum and halted such an effort to take the 2-1 win. Smart had a 2-for-2 showing at the plate to lead the offensive while Andrea Cain, Ella Cooper, Desi Cuevas and Dierks all logged a hit apiece. Ashton Dorman collected nine putouts and Norah Christensen and Smart each tallied two assists. Glanzer took her 20th win of the season after starting game one with a stifling presence in the circle. She notched nine strikeouts against 27 batters faced, allowing just one run through seven innings of work. GAME TWO: No. 12 Augustana 2, Winona State 0Two homeruns made all the difference in the series finale at Bowden Field as the Vikings claimed a 2-0 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep over another conference foe. Pitching staffs for the Vikings and Warriors each started dominantly, with neither allowing a hit until the bottom of the second inning. In that half of action, the first two batters struck out for Augustana, but Christensen was soon up to the plate. She was face-to-face with a 1-2 count before slamming a rocket of a shot up and over left field for the solo homer to put the first run on the board in the game. Winona State tallied two hits in the top of the fourth with two singles, but the effort would fall short as well as in the fifth inning after another single. The 1-0 score remained on the scoreboard for four innings and was broken when Cuevas was brought up to the plate. With the 2-1 count in her favor, she lined up and smashed a homerun out of the park to left center field. Her trip around the bases put AU ahead 2-0 and—following a quick bottom half of the next inning—secured the win for the home team. Christiansen, Cuevas and Smart all logged a hit in the affair as Christiansen, Harber and Lexi Lander each drew a walk. Dorman collected 10 putouts and Cooper added in five. In the circle, Lander improved to 18-3 on the season with the shutout win. She tallied 10 strikeouts against 27 batters faced and allowed just four hits through seven innings pitched. UP NEXTAugustana will hit the road for its final conference matchup of the season, facing Minnesota State on Saturday, April 26 beginning at 1 p.m.
