Indoor sandpit and sensory park moving to SF

HARRISBURG, S.D. (KELO) — A beloved Harrisburg playpark is making a big move to Sioux Falls.

While most parents will get angry if you track sand inside on your shoes, that doesn’t happen at the Sensory Studio, because the sand is already inside.

“They are always in the sandpit. And when it’s time to go home, they stay in the sandpit so that mom has to come in and get them up,” mother Desirae Hartman said.

“The sand pit is a great way for kids to be able to really engage their tactile senses and get in there and dig and feel that and get a magic-like play, imaginary play,” owner, Nicole Fluth said.

Along with the sandpit, The Sensory Studio offers a variety of different experiences to help children during their developmental years.

“We have dramatic play areas, so we have a little kitchen and a market and a firehouse and a vet. And then we have opportunities for kids to climb on our rock wall, to climb up into our slide area, go down the slide,” Fluth said.

While the studio has called Harrisburg home since 2020, now it’s going to make the move to Sioux Falls, as part of its partnership with Functional Kids Pediatric Therapy. While it will still offer the same things it does now, this will open the doors for new activities.

“We will just find special opportunities where we can kind of team up together and have those special events in the sensory studio space where we have more ability to kind of host larger events and share our knowledge with families,” Fluth said.

It’s all in an effort to help children develop in a fun way.

“Sensory plays are so important for them to be able to kind of feel different things, move their body around, learn about their body and space, and be able to engage with other kids around and learn how to interact,” Fluth said.

“They can come here and they can run and play, but they can also still learn counting in their ABCs, in their colors. And they’ve picked up on so much because they can do activities with their hands while they’re still learning,” Hartman said.

The Sensory Studio’s last open day to the public will be November 9th in Harrisburg, and its Sioux Falls location will open in the second half of November.

The Sensory Studio’s new address is 3000 E Jackson Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57108.
