Man injured in a 2-vehicle/bike crash Saturday morning

HARTFORD, S.D. (KELO) — A man received serious injuries after being hit on his bicycle by a vehicle north of Hartford Saturday morning.

According to the S.D. Department of Public Safety, at 9:09 a.m., a 60-year-old was riding his bicycle eastbound on 254th Street, about seven miles north of Hartford. A pickup towing a trailer with haybales was also traveling eastbound on 254th Street behind the bicyclist. A GMC Sierra, driven by a 71-year-old male, was traveling eastbound behind the pickup on the same street.

The bicyclist slowed down, used his arm signal to indicate a left-hand turn, and entered the westbound lane to turn.

At the same time, the driver of the Sierra decided to pass the pickup and collided with the bicyclist.

Electric vehicles and the potential dangers to first responders

The bicyclist came to rest in the north ditch. He received serious, non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet. It is unknown where he was transported to for medical treatment.

The driver of the Sierra was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The name of the bicyclist has not been released pending notification of family members.
