Minnehaha County’s general election certified

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — Minnehaha County Auditor Leah Anderson is pleased with how her first general election went.

“Overall, Minnehaha County held a very successful general election,” Anderson said at Friday’s board of commissioners meeting. “Our voter turnout was great at about 70% based on active registered voters of 136,817.”

Overall, around 30% of Minnehaha County voters used absentee ballots, with a vote total not far from 100,000.

“95,683: of that 66,976 were Election Day, and absentee was 28,707,” Commissioner Gerald Beninga said during the meeting.

Noem for Interior?

The commission had a chance Friday to compare two documents that capture vote totals; the point is to ensure they match before the official totals are forwarded to the secretary of state.

“Provided for you today are the election results, which are considered the canvass abstracts,” Anderson said during the meeting. “So the one that looks like the spreadsheet that’s 27 pages is considered the abstract, and that’s the one that we send to the state with the certification when we’re all done. I’ve also provided for you a copy of the official results summary report.”

The election is now officially certified with a unanimous vote Friday from the commission. Anderson conceded the processing of votes didn’t happen quickly. It took about 20 hours for every ballot to be counted. And some candidates took to social media to air their own grievances.

“Our goal is to be accurate, not fast,” Beninga said during Friday’s meeting. “And if some people are concerned about the time that it takes, we have to have priorities.”
