Trial on hold for Grand Gateway Hotel lawsuit

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Two years after NDN Collective filed a civil rights lawsuit against the owners of a Rapid City hotel, the trial is on hold.

The Retsel Corporation – which owns the Grand Gateway Hotel filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on Saturday.

Just one day before that filing, the corporation filed a lawsuit against the non-profit.

The original lawsuit says the owners of the Grand Gateway Hotel threatened to ban all Native Americans following a shooting in 2022.

Attorneys for NDN Collective claim the hotel discriminated against Native American customers and violated the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The new lawsuit – filed by the Retsel Corporation – claims that NDN Collective harassed the business for more than three years, defaming the business and leaving one of the owners scared for his life.
