Another round of scattered rain today; Heatwave this weekend

News Headlines

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are on the move again this morning, with the focus mainly in central SD to start the day.

You can see the rain slowly moving east from the Pierre area. The rain has been scattered in nature and that trend should continue.

You can see how the rain skipped over many of our official reporting stations the past 24 hours through 6am this morning.

Continue to watch that scattered rain as it moves toward Sioux Falls today. We expect the rain chances will keep temperatures down into the upper 70s to near 80 today in many areas East River. After today, a major heatwave is going to take the headlines, starting tomorrow. You can already see the widespread heat tomorrow on the map animation below. Temperatures will be even hotter for Friday with highs between 95 and 100 in many areas. It will be even hotter on Saturday.

Take a look at our forecast highs this weekend. We’ll likely see heat headlines with numbers this high. Winds will also be stronger at times, especially on Sunday afternoon in the southeast.

The major heatwave will come to an end early next week. We expect the pattern to break down with rounds of thunderstorms returning to the region. Notice the tropical connection to our southwest. The modeling for next week continue to send strong signals that this pattern bears watching. We could repeated round of heavy rain across portions of the plains, but the exact placement of the band of rain could very well shift south. We’ll continue to monitor the trends.

Here are the details of the forecast.
