Ash Wednesday on the go

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Ash Wednesday is a day observed by some Christians that marks the beginning of Lent.

One Sioux Falls church is observing the day a little differently than most churches.

Today people from different denominations will gather for Ash Wednesdaywhere a pastor or priest will mark their forehead with ashes.

“Just the time for all of us to come together and remember that we are nothing without Jesus. That from dust we were formed into dust we shall return,” The Table Ministry Pastor, Erica Varcoe said.

This year, The Table Ministry is partnering with the Military Heritage Alliance to have ashes on the go.

“We were visiting and we talked about Ash Wednesday when we go, ‘Hey, we got an idea.’ With all the industrial workers, with the two military bases just blocks away, people going to work may not be able to receive their ashes today. So let’s do something different and let’s do a drive-thru ashes program,” South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance executive director, Brian Phelps said.

“We have a little roundabout in front of our building, and they can just pull up and stop. And, a couple people have gotten out, but we just meet them right at their driver’s side door and greet them with a cup of coffee and give them their ashes, and they’re on their way,” Varcoe said.

The drive through system opened the doors for people who couldn’t make it to the service tonight, or for people who are apprehensive about church.

“We wanted to make sure that no one was forgotten about. No one was left behind,” Varcoe said.

“You never know with any given person what is going through their lives, what problems they’re having, what issues, it provides another venue, another source for people, as an outlet to, to help them in their lives,” Phelps said.
