What happened to the Baken Park sign in west Rapid City?

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Those driving on Mountain View Road or Canyon Lake Drive in the past few days in west Rapid City may have noticed something different in Baken Park. Or more accurately, something missing.

The “Baken Park” sign has been removed in order to clear up the parking lot. M.G. Oil, the owners of the property say that the biggest issue with the sign was the proximity to the entrance of the parking lot on the southeast side. Executive Assistant at M.G. Oil Company, Tanner Pruess, said that it was the main consideration in removing the sign. “We decided to take down the sign because it was a detriment to traffic flow, especially in front of Family Fare,” Pruess said. He added that the sign was also outdated and was not effective for advertisers. The sign had been around since before the 1972 Rapid City Flood.
