Baltic Mayor and other city officials resign

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — During a January 21 meeting of the Baltic City Council, several officials resigned from their office, according to the city calendar and unofficial minutes.

Per the minutes, during public input time, city attorney John Hughes, Planning and Zoning President Ed Wilson, Alderman Ryan Sinding and Mayor Deborah McIsaac all requested personal privilege and announced their immediate resignations.

After these resignations, the council went into executive session for a period of 18 minutes before continuing the meeting.

On January 24, the unofficial minutes report Board President Brian McGreevy was appointed interim Mayor until April 2026.

The council also appointed Patrick Glover as city attorney and noted they will look to appoint someone to the vacant alderman and planning and zoning roles.

Reached for comment on the situation, Interim Mayor McGreevy told KELOLAND News via phone Wednesday he had not spoken with any of the members of the council who resigned either before or after the action and added the resignations had come as a surprise to him.

Going forward, McGreevy said his goal is to run the city as usual.

KELOLAND News also reached former Mayor McIsaac, who provided the following statement.

Some council members circumvented city experts in a legal matter in our town. The experts respectfully resigned, I resigned in support of the appointed experts and the promises I made to tax payers.

A recording of the meeting in which the members resigned is available online.

In September 2023, the people of Baltic opted to retain Mayor McIsaac in a recall election.

In 2024, KELOLAND News reported a political action committee behind the recall effort was funded heavily by four individuals — Brian Hefty, Jenny Hefty, Matt Falck and Amy Falck — all of whom had mailing addresses listed outside of Baltic.
