HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (KELO) — Over the past week, several wildfires have popped up in the Black Hills — with the Green Acres Fire being the biggest one.
The Green Acres Fire started to approach homes and evacuation orders were made.
Mike Remington was across the state when the fire came near his house. Thankfully, his daughter and grandchild made it out safely.
“So they were at the house and they were told they had five minutes to evacuate,” Remington said. “And when you’re that far away there’s not really anything you can do about it. And you just hope for the best and you hope someone takes care of them and they were safe, and everything else can be replaced.”

The fire spread to 340 acres and got within three miles of Hot Springs.
“So we’re looking at our one-hour fuel moistures like our grasses. And so those fuel moistures dry out very rapidly very quickly within that hour timeframe and so when those fires do start happening, it’s very easy for it to start spreading in that grass,” SD Wildland Fire Chief of Operations Jason Rodriguez said
The fire quickly shifted when the high winds started to push it further south.
“You’re always concerned with a fire that’s near your house,” Remington said. “Then the wind shifted and pushed it towards our house and we saw smoke on our video camera and that’s when we knew it had to be coming at least within a general vicinity of us.”
“When we start getting into these gusts that are 30 to 40 miles per hour, it’s going to really push that fire in whatever direction the winds are going at that point in time. It’s going to cause that fire to move very fast and very aggressively in the grass and other fuel models,” Rodriguez said
Currently the Grass Acres Fire is sitting at 75% containment as federal, state, and Local agencies continue to fight it.
