February is designated as Black History Month, however it extends far beyond these 28 days.

“I am living black history, all of me, every bit, all of this every day is black history,” NAACP Sioux Falls President, Nieema Thasing said.
With some of the more recent examples being the murder of George Floyd.
“With the murder of George Floyd, the whole world was able to understand that highly melanated people aren’t all gangbangers or all this or all that. We come from a line of doctors, educators,” Thasing said.
To help raise awareness of the month, the NAACP of Sioux Falls is hosting a special screening of ‘The Six Triple Eight’.
“Good NAtured was very willing to work with us and giving us their space so we can put on a showing of the movie. The Sioux Falls Historical Society has also agreed to kind of talk about how ‘The Six Triple Eight’ impacted the area,” NAACP Sioux Falls Treasurer, Ashley Knoff said.

Whether it’s at the movie showing, or the other events taking place this month, the NAACP hopes everyone can celebrate and remember the importance of Black History Month.
“Black culture is firstly for black people, but also secondly for all people and all peoples,” Knoff said. “I think we all kind of listen to the music. We all kind of have the clothes and the fashion and it’s nice to see and celebrate where those sources are coming from.”
