Captain 11 Lane

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – He was the man who had the wisdom of Solomon and the strength of Atlas and was given the power to could control time. We are talking about, none other than, Captain 11.

This year, KELOLAND Media Group is celebrating his 70th anniversary by going to the outer galaxies to honor the iconic “man in the blue space suit.”

The latest happened early this morning right outside our studios where the Captain became the driving force behind kids’ local television programming.

The city street department rose to the occasion when we asked if this street could be renamed Captain 11 Lane.

“I think it’s a great tribute to Captain 11 on his 70th anniversary of the first show back on March 7th, 1955 to have this lane, Captain 11 Lane, come up and recognize his contributions to the community and all of KELOLAND,” Director Marketing and Creative services at KELOLAND Media Group Paul Farmer said.

When the city renames a street after you, you obviously made a difference.

That’s why a lot of the KELOLAND Media group employees gathered to watch.

For sign technician Joe Mentele it was kind of a surreal moment. Mentele says the Captain 11 show was part of his daily ritual while growing up around the Canova area.

“I remember coming home from school every day during the school week watching Captain 11, it was fun, he’d always would have the kids on camera on the show and flip the dials,” Mentele said.

Mentele says when he was told he was installing the Captain 11 street sign today, he started recalling a lot of old memories; especially the Captain 11 introduction.

“He must be kind, he must be fair, he must be brave; and I’m thinking of that and it’s going through my mind when we are honoring him, because Dave Dedrick was those things,” Mentele said.

A true sign, you’re someone special.

Next Friday, the mayor will proclaim March 7th as Captain 11 day.
