SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A special event is promoting the use of ethanol-blended fuel.
If your gas tank is nearing empty, you may want to wait until Saturday to fill up, as the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and Kwik Star celebrate Unleaded 88 Day.
“Tomorrow is the first Unleaded 88 Day, it’s the 88th day of the year, and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., gas will be $1.88 when you choose Unleaded 88,” South Dakota Corn’s Amanda Bechen said.

Amanda Bechen is the senior director of marketing and communications with South Dakota Corn and says Unleaded 88 is approved for all cars 2001 and newer.
“A lot of people don’t know that they can use it in their vehicle. 95% of the cars on the road today can use Unleaded 88,” Bechen said.
The enthanol-blended fuel was $2.70 Friday morning at Kwik Star on West 85th Street in Sioux Falls, 29 cents cheaper than regular Unleaded.
“I commute every day from Brookings and over a year I save almost a thousand dollars in gas compared to using premium,” Bechen said.
“In a lot of our stations, it’s over 50% of our sales and it’s growing every day because of the cost savings,” Kwik Star District Leader Joe Stortz said.
Joe Stortz is the district leader with Kwik Star and says the partnership with South Dakota Corn is a good one.
“They’re a local organization which promotes the local corn growers which also helps the community which Kwik Star is very in tune with helping the local communities, if they thrive we thrive,” Stortz said.
The event is part of a larger partnership to educate area drivers on the benefits of unleaded 88.
“Kids in South Dakota can drive at 14 and a lot of parents don’t know it’s safe to use Unleaded 88 in a vehicle, so educating kids in Driver’s Ed, but then also educating that soccer mom or maybe it’s somebody that’s always used premium gas and they’ve never realized that they could be experiencing cost savings,” Bechen said.
Something to ponder next time you pull up to the pump.
The special rate of $1.88 will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday (March 29), at any of South Dakota’s eleven Kwik Star locations.
