SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Christmastime and movies go hand in hand, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the busiest time of year at the State Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls.
The movie titles are often decades old, but that doesn’t slow the flow of traffic — even on Christmas Eve — at the State Theatre.
“It can be the busiest time for movie theaters,” State Theatre Executive Director Allison Weiland said.
Tuesday’s twin bill includes Home Alone and It’s a Wonderful Life. Executive Director Allison Weiland says the venue’s holiday success is just as much about the experience, and maybe getting out of the house, as it is the movie.
“Something to do, can put their feet up and relax, maybe they need to take a break from the small talk and just come in and enjoy that time as a family,” Weiland said.
“I have always wanted to come to Home Alone at the State Theatre on Christmas Eve, and I was excited when there was tickets available and I got them right away,” Sioux Falls resident Holly Mcfarlane said.
Holly Mcfarlane is seeing her second movie at the State Theatre, and says the nostalgia only adds to the experience.
“The screen, the seats, the whole environment just makes everything a little bit more exciting, especially during the holiday season,” Mcfarlane said.
The holiday festivities extend beyond what’s playing on the screen, including a daily game of Elf of the Shelf.
“We’re lucky to have the State Theatre in Sioux Falls to do these little extras, to have events for families to come out and experience this enjoyment of the holiday season,” Mcfarlane said.
And Weiland expects the State Theatre to remain busy all the way into the new year.
“We have Annie and we have some like classic Audrey Hepburn, you’re going to love it,” Weiland said.
The State Theatre will be showing “Annie” at 4 p.m. on Christmas Day, followed by “A Real Pain” at 7:30 p.m. There are a limited number of tickets available for each movie.
