SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Fence posts are being put up around the parking lot of the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House Tuesday morning.

In March, the Sioux Falls City Council voted to lease the parking lot from the Catholic Diocese in an effort “to improve behaviors of large groups who occupy the lot during the day.”
The new fence cost the city $70,000. According to Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum, there were over 2,500 calls for service in the area last year.
“Just to remind it serves two purposes. The fence allows our team to respond quicker rather than having to wait for an owner designee of the diocese. And again, the physical barrier can be a deterrent to the ease of congregating on that lot,” Thum said.
The lot will be on a five year lease according to the ordinance with the option to extend an additional five years at one-dollar per year.
