“I’ve always loved football, I grew up with two brothers my younger brother is actually a really good athlete and he’s always recruited me to be quarterback,” Sturm said.

“I just think it’s really fun, I’ve always played with my younger brothers and we played powder puff in high school I just think it’s a cool opportunity,” Johnson said.

“It’s exciting for both parties Augustana and Young women,” head coach Kiley Coyne said.

Kiley Coyne, who has played three years with the Sioux Falls Snow Leopards, is the head coach and says flag football will open up a lot of opportunities for young women to play a sport they love.

“The NFL has started promoting flag football for women in the high schools and now it’s gradually moving into college level,” Coyne said.

Augie is joining five other universities in the league.

As part of the partnership, the Minnesota Vikings with the support of the NFL will contribute $140,000 to support the league.

“A portion of it goes to each college it’s basically starter money for us to purchase all over our equipment, it’s going to help us with travel since Augustana goes all the way up to TCO Stadium,” Coyne said.

They’ve already had three practices. For more on the team and its schedule, click here.
