SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — On Monday, the South Dakota House denied reconsideration of a bill that would allocate funds to build a new state men’s prison.
South Dakota’s current men’s prisons, the South Dakota State Penitentiary and Mike Durfee State Prison, both are housed in buildings constructed in 1881, 144 years ago.
1881 was eight years before South Dakota became a state. It was the year James Garfield, the, 20th President of the United States, was assassinated. It was the year the American Red Cross was founded. Brahm was putting out new music, and the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday faced off against a group of cattle rustlers at the O.K. Corral.
But despite this, these South Dakota facilities are not the oldest active facilities in the nation. KELOLAND poured through the DOC sites of all fifty states, looking through hundreds of facilities to find that there are several older, though there are some asterisks.
California
California has two facilities older than 1881. These are Folsom State Prison, constructed in 1878, and San Quentin, constructed in 1852.
Oregon
The Oregon State Prison dates back to 1866.
Colorado*
In the state of Colorado, The Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility was constructed in 1871. The asterisk in this case comes from a lawsuit in the 1970s and 1980s, which resulted in remodeling, renovation and modernization. The facility is now an ADA-designated facility.
Nebraska*
First constructed in 1869, the Nebraska State Prison underwent reconstruction, with cellblocks built in the 1800s replaced in the 1980s.
Missouri
The Western Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center is in St. Joseph, with portions of the complex housed in the original State Hospital built in 1874.
Iowa
The Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility in Mount Pleasant, IA, was opened in 1974, though the building itself dates back to the 1860s.
Louisiana*
The Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as “The Walls”, was originally built back in 1835 and ran as a prison camp for many years before being taken over by the state in 1901. Only the Warden’s House remains from the 1835 facility.
Wisconsin
In the state of Wisconsin, the Waupun Correctional Institution was greenlit back in 1851, and the first permanent building was completed in 1854.
Illinois
The Menard Correctional Center in Menard, IL was opened for the first time back in 1878.
Indiana
Indiana is home to two prison facilities that predate South Dakota’s prisons. The Indiana State Prison was built in 1860, and the Indiana Women’s Prison was opened in 1873.
New Hampshire*
The New Hampshire State Prison for men was built back in 1812. A “new” facility was built in 1878, and remains in use today, albeit with extensive renovations and new construction.
Maine*
In Maine, the Bolduc Correctional Facility, which was opened in 1930, is on the site of the State Prison farm built in 1824.
New Jersey
The New Jersey State Prison in Trenton was built in 1833 and is still in service.
New York
New York state is home to four different prisons pre-dating South Dakota’s. These are Elmira, built in 1876, Clinton, built in 1845, Sing Sing, built in 1825, and Auburn, built back in 1817.
