Iowa man killed in shooting near Lead identified

LEAD, S.D. – A 59-year-old Iowa man is dead following a shooting that occurred last Thursday evening during a fight at a rental cabin south of Lead.At approximately 5:22 p.m. on June 12, the Lawrence County Dispatch Center received a report of an altercation at a cabin off Highway 385. The incident involved four men from Iowa and Nebraska who were in the area as part of a UTV riding group. Three of the men were staying at the cabin.

Authorities say the altercation escalated into a physical fight, during which a 9mm handgun was discharged once. The bullet struck 59-year-old Larry Petersen of Audubon, Iowa. Petersen was transported to Lead-Deadwood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing, and they will provide more details as they become available.
