Man arrested for aggravated assault in SWAT situation

SIOU FALLS S.D. (KELO) — A man was arrested for aggravated assault early Friday morning in Sioux Falls.

Donte Newton, 33, of Sioux Falls was charged with one count of domestic aggravated assault for punching a woman and causing her to lose consciousness, according to police spokesman Sam Clemens.

The incident occurred in an apartment in the 700 block of Western Avenue. There were two children in the apartment during the incident, police said.

After the suspect assaulted the woman, he drove off with the children. Newton was believed to be intoxicated.

According to Clemens, officers were able to locate his car on the 800 block of Cleveland Avenue. Newton was inside an apartment nearby and threatening to harm the children.

Clemens said police then activated the SWAT team and eventually arrested him around 7:15 a.m. The children were located safe and unharmed, Clemens said.

Clemens said that Newton is related to both the woman and children.
