Neighbor: Woman, child never allowed to leave home

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A neighbor said a woman and child were never allowed to leave their apartment, and that’s not all.

“Unfortunately, it started at the very beginning. There was something very off,” Nikki Bauman said.

On Thursday, 43-year-old Kyle Huff and Amanda Huff were booked into the Minnehaha County Jail. Kyle Huff is accused of raping the same woman for nearly five years. Amanda Huff was initially charged with domestic abuse. As of Monday afternoon, she’s also charged with abuse or neglect to a disabled adult and misprision of a felony, or concealing a crime.

Bauman said she’s lived next door to the Huffs in a central Sioux Falls apartment building for almost a year. She said she hardly ever saw the victim or child.

“The yelling throughout the night, slamming things around,” Bauman said. “The only time [the victim] ever was allowed to leave is if the fire alarms went off in the building, and she was never properly dressed.”

Bauman told KELOLAND News she had some interactions with Amanda Huff. She said sometimes Amanda would ask her for a ride or to borrow something.

“The man really would not let anyone in. They would be afraid when the door knocked. Amanda was the only one allowed to leave the apartment to get groceries or to go places. No one else was allowed to leave,” Bauman said.

Bauman said she called Child Protective Services a couple months ago after multiple interactions with the Huffs. When officials arrested both of them, Bauman said she later drove the victim to court and told detectives what she’d been noticing.

“The most interaction I had is actually after they were arrested. She came to my place,” Bauman said. “She asked for a ride to court. She didn’t have a ride, and she that didn’t have any food in the place, so I made her a plate.”

While Bauman played an important role in getting the alleged victim assistance, non profits across South Dakota are also ready to help in the healing journey. The Compass Center is one of those places.

“Filing protection orders, immediate access to housing, financial assistance, a variety of other pieces that are for those immediate things where if somebody says, I need to get out of here, I need to leave, then I can go someplace and there will be people that understand,” the Compass Center executive director Michelle Trent said.

Amanda Huff is now being held on a $20,000 cash only bond. Kyle Huff’s bond is set at $200,000 cash only.
