New SD vehicle registration system launches

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Monday was the launch of a new software program to process vehicle registrations in South Dakota.

It’s called 605Drive.

Sarah Davids didn’t plan on spending much time at the Minnehaha County Treasurer’s Office Monday morning.

“I was expecting to go in and out, probably like 20 minutes,” Davids said.

But she found herself standing in a long line as she waited to get new tags for her car.

Minnehaha County Treasurer Kris Swanson said staff were taking their time Monday as the new program debuted.

The treasurer’s office also had fewer windows available to customers on Monday so staff could work together to navigate the new software.

“Everybody’s been very patient with us, so we appreciate that. We’ve had to call state for questions already, but it’s going to be alright,” Swanson said.

Davids didn’t mind being patient Monday.

“Playing solitaire, just talking to people,” Davids said.

Swanson expects the pace to pick up soon.

“I’m thinking within a couple weeks, we’re going to have a good feel. There’s still going to be things down the road that we’re still learning, at least I think we’re going to be able to know where to go on these programs to make it go faster,” Swanson said.

According to the state Department of Revenue’s website, the previous system was outdated and needed to be replaced.
