SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — A family of otters has been spotted along the Big Sioux River.

Rickenbaugh said she saw the family near the Sioux Falls Bike Trail.

Dan Griffith, a conservationist and former biology teacher, says otters vanished from South Dakota more than 100 years ago but were reintroduced a few decades ago near Flandreau.

“I lived here for 79 years and until two years ago never saw a river otter,” Griffith told KELOLAND News in September.

The river otter was removed from South Dakota’s threatened species list in 2020, allowing for a trapping season. The harvest limit is 20 otters a year. The season this year lasted only a few weeks in November.
