SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — An inmate died in custody in Pennington County.

The inmate was discovered dead in his cell on Sunday morning during routine cell checks by correctional staff at Pennington County Jail. The 53-year-old male was checked into the facility the night before.

Life-saving measures were performed by jail staff and responding paramedic but were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced dead.

According to protocol, the state Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is handling the death investigation and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office will assume coroner responsibilities.

Immediate family members have been notified of the death. Pennington County Sheriff’s Department is giving family members time to notify others before the man’s name is publicly released.
