Rhoden names his pick for Lt. Governor

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota has a new Lt Governor, and he is no stranger to Pierre. Most recently, Tony Venhuizen represented District 13 in the State House of Representatives, where he served as vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee. But his involvement in State Government goes well beyond the legislature.

Venhuizen grew up in Armour, and now lives in Sioux Falls. He’s very familiar with the Governor’s office and how it works, having served three governors. He first came to the State Capitol to work for Governor Mike Rounds. He then served in the Dennis Daugaard administration, eventually becoming chief of staff. And would later serve as chief of staff for Governor Kristi Noem for three years.

“I have had the privilege of working closely with three excellent Lt Governors, Dennis Daugaard and Matt Michaels and Larry Rhoden they are all here today. The job of Lt. Governor is to be a supporter and a partner to the governor, you can’t be ready to step in if you aren’t a partner. I’m excited to help Governor Rhoden lead our state,” said Venhuizen.

Remembering Craig Lloyd

You might say serving in Pierre is in Venhuizen’s blood. His Grandfather, Henry Poppen, was a long-time state senator who brought him to the legislature when he was very young. This picture was posted on his campaign website.

He is both a Jackrabbit and a Coyote, getting his undergraduate degree from SDSU and a law degree from USD.

Just like the man he is replacing, in his role as Lt Governor, Venhuizen will also serve as presiding officer of the South Dakota Senate. “I resigned from the state house just before this press conference, so I can be ready to be sworn in as soon as I’m confirmed. I looking forward to visiting with my legislative colleagues and answering their questions,” said Venhuizen. He and his wife Sara, who is the daughter of former Governor Dennis Daugaard have 3 kids. Venhuizen becomes the state’s 40th Lt Governor.
