Running and eating in support of children

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — An organization committed to improving the lives of children in Sioux Falls is hosting an event to benefit nonprofits with a similar mission.

An event full of cardio and carbohydrates is set for Saturday at Cherry Rock Park.

“It’s a 5K race and then a bake sale as well, so it’s a chance for people to not only participate as runners, but if they don’t feel like running they can come to support the cause by purchasing some baked goods as well,” South Sioux Falls Kiwanis Club President Austin Klett said.

The Carbs for Kids 5K & Bake Sale is one of the South Sioux Falls Kiwanis Club’s biggest and tastiest events of the year.

“Oh My Cupcakes!, Breadico, Flyboy, Eileen’s Cookies, to name a few,” Klett said.

Klett says the event raised over $10,000 last year, all of which was donated to local nonprofits.

“The Kiwanis mission as a whole is to improve the world one community and one child at a time and so we really lean into that wholeheartedly. All these funds go to local organizations such as the Toy Lending Library, Family Visitation Center, Teddy Bear Den,” Klett said.

“If we can support people as they’re growing up, I think it makes our community stronger in the future,” race sponsor Josh Grode Wolters said.

Grode Wolters started running during the pandemic and says it blossomed from there.

“Races are a way for me to get my competitive edge out, and then sponsoring the race that was something really important to me that Kiwanis Club does really good work,” Grode Wolters said.

It’s an event where you can have your cake and eat it too.

“Apart from the donuts,” Grode Wolters said, “it’s a smaller race, there aren’t a million people and so it’s a nice chance to get out and enjoy the spring weather, kind of the first race of the year,” Grode Wolters added.

All in support of kids.

The Carbs for Kids 5K & Bake Sale is this Saturday at Cherry Rock Park. The race starts at 9:00 a.m., while the bake sale runs from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. The cost to run is $25, while the bake sale is a free-will donation.
