ROATAN, Honduras – What was once Tropical Storm Sara continues to weaken and was downgraded to a tropical depression on Sunday afternoon after the deadly, late-season storm slammed portions of Central America with torrential rain that led to catastrophic flooding and mudslides.With atmospheric steering currents in near total collapse, Sara had been essentially adrift while it streamed a constant river of tropical moisture into the vulnerable countryside. The National Hurricane Center said the center of the storm moved only 10 miles over a 15-hour period between midday Friday and Saturday morning. More than 71,000 people have suffered some impacts from Sara with more than 2,000 rescues so far, government agencies said. On that track, the center of Sara will continue to move inland over the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday before it opens up into a trough by Sunday night or Monday.HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHEROver northern Honduras, additional rainfall of 1-3 inches is expected, with some total amounts of around 40 inches remaining possible.”The risk of catastrophic and life-threatening flooding impacts will continue, especially along and near the Sierra La Esperanza,” the NHC warned on Sunday.Across portions of Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, western Nicaragua, and the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, Tropical Storm Sara is expected to produce an additional 3-5 inches of rain with locally higher amounts of 15 inches possible.Sara is expected to eventually dissipate as it moves over the Yucatán Peninsula, but its remnants are forecast to join forces with a cold front dropping into the Gulf Coast to bring heavy rains to the Interstate 10 corridor and Florida.
