Sioux Falls Police Department Spokesman Sam Clemens said someone received a phone call from a caller that said their bank account had been hacked. The caller then transferred the phone call to a different caller, who then demanded payment in gift cards.

The victim purchased 10 $250 gift cards to give to the caller, who claimed they were associated with the victim’s bank.

“If somebody says they need some type of pay with immediacy, that should be a red flag,” Clemens said.

Clemens also said they’ve seen an increase in cryptocurrency scams.
