SD Democrats show frustration over ‘imported ideas’

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — During their weekly news conference, Democrat lawmakers said they look forward to working with the new leadership in the governor’s office.

However, the tone quickly turned to frustration with their fellow lawmakers over legislation that Democrats call “imported ideas.”

Democrat leaders specifically addressed two bills, one requiring a person’s citizenship status to be displayed on their driver’s license and another requiring the 10 commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom.

“The purpose of this is supposed to be to not allow people to vote who are not citizens, but I would say that our elections are already fairly safe and secure and well regulated,” Liz Larson.

“The attack by people on our public educators and public education this is a mandate that wasn’t asked for,” Jamie Smith.

Senate Bill 51 passed the Senate this week and now heads to the House.
