Brookings PD investigating SDSU football player death

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — Nate White, a sophomore for the SDSU football team, passed away in Brookings. He was 20-years-old.

The death was confirmed by the university Wednesday evening.

“Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White,” SDSU head coach Dan Jackson said. “Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination and overall positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout the upcoming season.”

The city of Brookings released a statement on Wednesday saying the police department is investigating the death. The cause of death is unknown.

The autopsy on White has been completed at Sanford in Sioux Falls but results may not be available for several weeks, Brookings Police Chief Michael Drake said Thursday in an interview with KELOLAND News.

“It can be up to two to four weeks,” Drake said. The autopsy will include a toxicology report, he said.

A roommate of White called 911 at approximately 6:44 a.m. on Wednesday. The report was White was not breathing and unresponsive in his bed. Efforts to resuscitate were made by Brookings Ambulance and police, but were unsuccessful.

White began his collegiate career at Wisconsin, where he spent two seasons. He was one of the top prep recruits out of high school, after rushing for 1,345 yards and 26 touchdowns.

White was a graduate of Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The investigation into White’s death is ongoing and anyone with information should contact the City of Brookings Police Department.
