BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — No. 3 SDSU advanced to the FCS quarterfinals with a 35-18 win over No. 14 Montana in a rematch of last year’s national title game at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium Saturday afternoon.
After the Grizzlies took the lead with field goal in the first quarter, the Jackrabbits responded with a touchdown on the next drive to take a lead they never relinquished. Mark Gronowski punched it in from the one to cap off a nine-play, 57-yard drive.
On the next State drive, the hosts extended the lead to double figures when Gronowski hit Griffin Wilde for a 34-yard TD. The pair connected for another score in the final minute of the half as SDSU took a 21-3 lead into the locker room.
After a scoreless third quarter, SDSU found the endzone again on the second play of the fourth. Gronowski punched it in from the half yard line for his second rushing TD of the game. Less than a minute later, the Jacks’ defense put the icing on a strong performance. Adam Bock notched his second career pick-6 with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown to make it 35-3.
South Dakota State (11-2) outgained Montana 399-306, including 222-75 on the ground.
Gronowski finished 12-of-16 for 151 yards, two passing TDs and two rushing scores. He went 8-for-9 for 115 yards and those two touchdowns in the first half.
Wilde reeled in seven catches for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Sioux Falls product eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
Amar Johnson registered 103 yards on the ground, and Angel Johnson had 91.
SDSU is now set to face Incarnate Word in the quarterfinals in Brookings next weekend.
