LINCOLN, NEB. (KELO) — South Dakota State volleyball fell to Miami in straight sets in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening in Lincoln, Neb.
This season marked the Jackrabbits’ second trip to the NCAA Tournament at the Division-I level and first in 17 years. They wrapped up the season with a 27-3 record. South Dakota State won its first 22 matches of the season and was the nation’s last unbeaten team.
The match went 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.
THE MATCH
The two teams traded points in the early going of the first set before a 10-3 Miami run put the Hurricanes in front by seven. The ‘U’ outhit the Jacks .325-.111.
SDSU raced out to a hot start in the second set and led 11-3. The Canes scored seven straight to pull within one at 15-14. The two sides traded points until the final stretch. After the Jackrabbits took a 23-22 lead, UM scored the final three to close out the set. State hit .071 in the set.
Facing elimination, the Jacks scored two of the first three points in the third. Miami reeled off a run of six straight to surge in front 18-7 midway through the set. South Dakota State managed just an .026 hitting percentage in the set.
Sylvie Zgonc led the Jackrabbits’ attack with nine kills in the match. Rylee Martin tallied 12 assists and 10 digs. Sydni Schetnan registered six kills and five blocks.
