SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In the city of Sioux Falls, food service inspection scores are broken down into three tiers: green (90-100), yellow (80-89) and red (70-79). In recent inspections, none fall into red, and the vast majority fall into green. In total, 31 fell into yellow.
You can check out all the sites in the city yourself.
Dominic Miller, the city’s Environmental Health Manager in 2023, spoke with KELOLAND News at the time about how to interpret the data below.
35-year-old arrested in early morning crime spree including stolen bus
Businesses are inspected no less than twice a year. Each business starts with a score of 100, and points are deducted with individual violations.
Miller had explained that violations have different weights to them, with some worth more points than others.
“Open [the report] up and don’t just rely on the score itself,” said Miller in 2023, noting that the score alone does not always tell the full story.
Miller had noted that violations that could result in someone getting sick carry the most weight, so if a business were to be filthy from start to finish, resulting in a series of 1- 2 points. violations, they could still wind up with a score in the mid-90s.
Meanwhile, an employee coming to work and not washing their hands — a five-point violation — and then handling food with bare hands — a three-point violation — would knock a business down to a 92 right off the bat.
All this means that based on the nature of the violations, you may still feel more comfortable dining at a restaurant with a score in the 80s, or you may wish to avoid one with a score in the 90s. It depends on the consumer’s individual discretion.
Note: Locations are listed by score in descending order. If locations have matching scores, as many do, they will be listed in alphabetical order. These only include restaurants/service sites, not groceries.
