Homelessness in Sioux Falls: Numbers and needs
Authorities believe a woman died of exposure on Madison Street, basically in the middle of nowhere, leaving them with a lot of unanswered questions.
It was Sunday night and bitterly cold.
Authorities say the woman was wearing winter clothing, but the temperature at the time was 3-below zero and the wind chill was minus 14 when some passersby just happened to stumble across something that shocked them.
“Individuals found what they believed to be a body laying in the middle of the road,” Captain Josh Phillips said.
That body was later identified as 35-year-old Cassandra Shields, who lives in Sioux Falls.
At this time, authorities aren’t saying Shield’s death is suspicious, but it’s still under investigation. They are asking for the public’s help.
They’re trying to figure out why Shields was out in the cold on a low maintenance road – that not many cars use.
Plus, the road is closed to thru traffic because of construction.
They also want to know who she was with in the hours leading up to her death.
“We want to find out how she got to that area and why she was in that area,” Phillips said.
At this point, authorities believed Shields arrived in the area sometime on Sunday.
If you have any information that can help with the investigation, you can contact the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.
