Storm Center AM Update: Dangerously Cold into Monday Night

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Arctic air will continue to settle over KELOLAND as well as a majority of the continental United States, prompting a wave of cold weather headlines for the short-term outlook.

First, we have extreme cold warnings in place until noon CST Sunday for the Madison/Brookings/Marshall area, with another extreme cold warning for portions of north-central and northeastern KELOLAND until Tuesday morning. Wind chill values may drop below -40 at times, causing frost bite on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Cold weather advisories are in effect for the entirety of KELOLAND through at least 12 pm CST/11 am MST today, with a new set of cold weather advisories beginning tonight and lasting into Tuesday for everyone that is NOT under the aforementioned extreme cold warning in northern South Dakota. Wind chill values may drop between -30 and -40 at times.

Please take all necessary precautions if you must be out and about today, as this intense cold will last through Monday night and into Tuesday morning. By Tuesday, the cold finally eases off a bit, though temperatures are still going to be below average.

Wednesday is when the change really comes along. 20s and 30s return on both sides of the river, and that sticks with us through the rest of the work and school week. Even the start of next weekend is shaping up to be pretty seasonable overall.

Along the way, we won’t have much moisture to work with. While there is a chance for some snow showers by Wednesday into Thursday, that’s just about it for a majority of the region. The exception is out west, where some flurries are possible into Friday and Saturday.
