Storm Center AM Update: One More Hot Day; Storms Overnight

News Headlines

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — We’ll start this discussion with a little “Good news…Bad news” segment. The good news is that, after today, the heat we’ve been dealing with will be out of the region and headed east of us. The bad news is that the ride to get to that point will be rather bumpy at times.

Let’s start with the heat. This won’t be a case where everyone gets in on record challenging heat this time around. With the advancement of a cold front today, we’ll see a divide between the haves (East River) and the have nots (West River…especially north and west). To the east, 90s and low 100s are possible once again, with Sioux Falls having its best shot to beat a record (Which is 97 today). To the northwest, we’ll see highs in the 70s and even 60s depending on the advancement of that aforementioned cold front.

We have one more round of heat advisories and extreme heat warnings for areas near/east of the James River through the first half of the evening. Please do what you can to stay cool and hydrated.

That sets the stage for this evening and tonight. With a frontal boundary nearby and pushing east, we’ll have a triggering mechanism and plenty of heat and instability for showers and thunderstorms to pop up. Some of these storms may be strong to severe as we head into the evening and overnight time frame, with all forms of severe weather possible Have your StormTracker App ready to go and stay weather aware as we head into the night.

A Slight Risk for severe weather is in place East River and extending into western and southwestern KELOLAND, with a Marginal Risk along the SD/WY border and into NW South Dakota. Most of the morning and afternoon should remain mainly quiet, but we’ll be watching the second half of the day carefully as mentioned earlier.

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the morning on Monday to the south and east, but the big story to start the work week will be the noticeably cooler temperatures East River. The intense heat of the weekend will be gone and stay away for a while.

The chance to see showers and thunderstorms, however, doesn’t go away any time soon. In fact, we have a daily chance for unsettled weather through at least Thursday…with some days having better chances than others. Keep an eye on the skies if you have any outdoor plans. We’ll try to dry out by the end of the week with another warm-up on the way…though not as intense as what we’ve just endured.
