Storm Center PM Update: Messy Tuesday Outlook

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — We have a lot to go over in the short-term outlook, so let’s hit the ground running after a brief look at how warm we got to start the work and school week.

As of 2:30 pm CST Monday

Low pressure over the Four Corners region will continue to develop and push northeastward toward KELOLAND and, by extension, the Northern Plains. Moisture is expected to start as rain overnight with milder temperatures in place before a gradual switch to snow occurs from west to east.

Various winter weather headlines are in place, so let’s go over them one at a time.

First, a winter storm warning is in effect for portions of south-central and SW South Dakota between Winner and Pine Ridge until 12 am CST/11 pm MST Tuesday night. A blizzard warning is in effect for Cherry County until 12 pm CST/11 am MST Wednesday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the central and northern Black Hills until 5 pm MST Tuesday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for central and eastern KELOLAND until 6 pm CST Tuesday evening. Lastly, a winter storm watch is in effect for the Buffalo Ridge region until 6 am CST Wednesday.

Outside of the potential for snow, winds will be a big concerns as we go into Wednesday morning.

Wind gusts may reach and exceed 50 to 60 mph at times, causing drifting and even white-out conditions at times. Please secure anything you can’t bring inside during this time.

Once we get to Wednesday, winds slowly calm down and moisture also exits to our east. We’ll get a small break in the action before some of us watch Friday. This will be due to a little clipper of a system that brushes southern KELOLAND…especially near and south of I-90.

The weekend outlook is progressively warmer and pretty pleasant…perfect weather for setting our clocks ahead one hour on Sunday. Even the start of next week is shaping up to be mainly quiet.
