Support needed to help overcrowding in Humane Society

News Headlines

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Kennels are full, resources are stretched thin, and staff at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society are sounding the alarm for help.

“We have 124 dogs. So obviously we’re over our capacity for dog space. Some of our members of staff here have offered up their offices to help house animals. We have a few animals in foster care right now,” said Dana Knozem, Community Outreach Director

The shelter says the increase in dogs is due to a combination of different factors: owner surrenders, abandoned pets and strays.

“We are consistently at capacity and keeping this many animals in our care, which really comes a strain on our financial resources, on our equipment,” said Knozem

To ease overcrowding, the Humane Society is urging the community to step in.

“We had 86 animals come in last week. Just dogs. If we can get a few of them out into the home and kind of sort through the ones we have here, it definitely helps our process.” said Ryan Kruse, Customer Operations Director

The shelter says even one adoption can make a huge difference right now.

“The best way that you can help is by donating. We do have a Humane Heroes program, where you sign up to give monthly donations. If you’re unable to donate, just sharing the word on social media, sending it out. If you can’t adopt, maybe your friend of a friend would be able to adopt, and we need to get the word out there.” Knozem said.
