SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Next week, city council will meet for a second time to discuss an ordinance on parking. This would bring a text-to-pay system to downtown Sioux Falls.
“It’ll just give you one more additional payment option for parking, which will be to be able to use your cell phone to pay with a credit card at any of our meters throughout downtown,” said Matt Nelson, public parking facilities manager for the City of Sioux Falls.

The ordinance would allow the city to charge an extra 45 cents to pay for the third-party system. It’s all in an attempt to move the city in an electronic-based direction.
“I do think that’s a big step in the right direction,” Sioux Falls resident Alicia Engelking said. “I think it’s electronic-based options for everything is kind of what the future is. I think that’s the kind of keep up with the times but it’s important to follow those things and to modernize the area.”
The text-to-pay also can send reminders if you’re about to run out of time on your meter.
“I think I’ve gotten a parking ticket because I’ve gone over my time on a meter and I just spent more time than I have planned somewhere,” Engelking said. “I think the ability to add time from your phone will be very convenient. And I think people will like using it.”

If passed by city council, text-to-pay could be an option as soon as this summer.
“We are actually starting to design the artwork for labeling and signage on the meters and throughout downtown,” Nelson said. “That takes time to do that. Then the next piece of it is actually labeling every meter. So we will pull every meter off of the street, we will clean up those meters, we will re-label them all so they’re all consistent.”
