SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It’s a topic at the forefront of many people’s minds, the price of eggs. And with Easter this weekend, a holiday that sports eggs as part of its symbolism, some people are taking matters into their own hands.
You can tell Easter is near, when the chicks are here. At the Fleet Farm in Sioux Falls, it’s the first year of having chicks.

“I know other Fleet Farms were doing, I believe last year, and so, they did really well last year. And so they went ahead and open it up for more stores. And other stores are doing ducks as well. But our fleet farm, because this is our first year, we’re only doing the chicks,” Fleet Farm Sales Manager, Amy Packham said.
While it’s their first year, the chicks have been a hot commodity.
“People were lining up at 6:30 a.m., even though we only open at seven, and there was a line of at least by the time we started selling them, there was like a line of 56 people. There was a lot of people. They brought lawn chairs. They were ready to go for these chickens,” Fleet Farm part time sales member, Rebecca Loehrer said.
One of the possible reasons that chicks are flying off the shelves, is because of how expensive eggs have gotten.
“I think a lot of people they’re wanting to just try and lower their cost. So they’re not spending the $9 a carton of eggs. Instead, they can get a $4 chicken. And in a couple of months, they’ll have as many eggs as they need,” Packham said.
But there’s some important things you should know before you go pick up some chicks.
“Do your research. Make sure that you have everything you need from, like, the bedding, enclosure, food, water, electrolytes for the water so that they stay healthy,” Loehrer said.
If the chicks sell out this weekend, don’t worry, they’ll be available at fleet farm until September.
