SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Over the weekend, a Sioux Falls record was broken. This is a record no one wanted to see surpassed and it was the death of 25-year-old Aidan Quickbear that did it.
Quickbear, who died of injuries from a stabbing, represents the city’s 14th homicide in 2024, a number which now surpasses the previous record of 13 back in 2020.
SFPD: No arrests in Saturday homicide
KELOLAND News spoke to police about the high number of homicides just three weeks ago, and were told that “reaching the record high number is not something that we want to see but it’s important to also reflect on the low numbers in-between the record highs.”
With this statement, police were referring to the homicide totals of five, seven and two in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively.
The 14 homicides in 2024 sets a new benchmark for the police department, whose records on the homicide numbers date back to the early 1970s.
So far, Sioux Falls Police have announced eight arrests in connection with 10 out of the 14 homicides listed below.
We have mapped out the locations of these 14 homicides below. Due to a handful of homicides happening in one location or at one time, there are only 11 pins on the map. You can click the pins to find more details.
