USD claims share of Valley title with comeback vs. NDSU

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — No. 4 USD came back to knock off top-ranked NDSU 29-28 on Aidan Bouman’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Javion Phelps with 12 seconds left in the regular-season finale at the DakotaDome Saturday afternoon. The victory secured a three-way tie atop the Missouri Valley Football Conference standings between the Coyotes, Bison and SDSU.

After the game was knotted at 14 at the half, North Dakota State scored 14 of the first 17 in the second half to take an 11-point lead with just over four minutes to play. The Yotes closed the gap to five just 48 seconds later on a 40-yard Bouman TD pass to Jack Martens. That set the stage for Bouman’s game-winner in the final minute.

South Dakota outgained NDSU by nearly 100 yards through the air (272-174). The two teams split the time of possession nearly right down the middle.

Bouman went 18-for-30 for 272 yards and two TDs. Phelps led the receiving group with 79 yards. Travis Theis paced the running back room with 66 yards on 13 carries.

The Coyotes will learn their draw for the FCS Playoffs Sunday with the Selection Show.
