Windy days continue in KELOLAND

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Another windy day was felt across KELOLAND.

Northwest winds of 20 to 40 mph were common, on what has been a windy period dating back to March first.

Strong northwest winds ushered in much cooler air today as temperatures fell to the 40s and 50s for highs. Strong winds during this time of year is a fairly common thing.

We’ve been above average since 2020, it’s making up for the period that’s below average from 2008 to 2013.

This is also our 9th windiest year since 2000.

But it’s interesting to see, when comparing the wind gusts during the same time, this year comes in 2nd with an average gust just over 34 mph. It trails the top spot, 2022, by less than a half mile per hour.

It’s been a windy start to spring. But there is some good news, April is usually the month with our highest wind speeds, then it usually tapers off.
