Black Hills National Forest enforces Stage 2 fire restrictions

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Stage 2 fire and smoking restrictions are in place for the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) effective Friday, according to the USDA/Forest Service U.S. Department of Agriculture press release.

Fire closes Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park

Stage 2 restrictions prohibit:

The ignition of any fire, campfire, charcoal barbecue or grill unless the device is fueled only by liquid gas that can be turned on or off.

Smoking except within and enclosed vehicle or building.

Operating any combustion engine without a spark arresting device installed, maintained and working.

Welding or operating a torch with an open flame.

Using any explosives including fireworks.

Using a motor vehicle off National Forest service roads unless parking 10 feet away from any vegetation.

These restrictions are in effect for the BHNF in South Dakota and Wyoming through December 25, 2024.

The northern, central and southern Black Hills are in an extreme fire danger this weekend brought on by long-term drought conditions and high winds.
