Dispatcher position added for non-emergency calls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Metro Communications hears about anything from loud neighbors to medical emergencies. But they’re looking to grow their team even more.

“We’re currently seeking additional emergency communications operators to join our team, and as an emergency communications operator, you need to be at least 18 years of age, a graduate from high school or a GED and be eligible for certification under the Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commission,” said Aimee Chase, Metro Communications Administrator.

Emergency operators go through 26 weeks of training, where they first learn in a classroom. Then, they get to apply those skills.

“They’re working side by side when they’re on the floor with a training officer actually taking calls, having somebody feed them the information so that they get that real-world experience,” said Metro Supervisor of Quality Assurance Tim Schleis.

Not only is Metro Communications looking for emergency dispatchers, but they’ve added a new position: one that may be less stressful.

“This new position provides an opportunity for those who feel called to serve but may not feel called to serve in a crisis situation. So, serving in the nonemergency communication role is a great opportunity to get a feel for the environment and to work alongside those that are taking our emergency calls,” said Chase.

Training for the nonemergency position is 3 weeks long. Chase says that those working in the nonemergency department always have the choice to be promoted to an emergency operator.
