DOC: Prison lockdown has ended

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The state prison facilities in Sioux Falls are no longer under lockdown, the Department of Corrections said in a news release.

The lockdown at the State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex began September 15 and ended October 2.

Family members of penitentiary inmates share concerns

According to the news release, the lockdown was a “proactive security measure, which included searches for dangerous contraband and illicit substances.”

On September 19, the DOC released images of handmade weapons, unauthorized electronics equipment and other items that could be fashioned or used as weapons that they seized during the searches.

State Penitentiary finds ‘contraband’

The DOC said the lockdown was not in response to a fight or an assault.

According to the latest data from the DOC, there are 772 total inmates at the State Pen and 490 inmates at the Jameson Annex as of Aug. 31.
